The sea has something special in it, which makes a proposal feel bigger than the moment itself. The sound of the waves, the light reflecting on the sand and the open skyline behind two people willing to spend the rest of their lives with each other. As a photographer, I love capturing these special moments at the beach more than anything. Every beach proposal that I have captured through my lens is different from one another; however, the feeling is always the same. If you are planning a surprise proposal in Valencia, here is what I have learned throughout my photography experience.

Choosing a Beach for Your Proposal in Valencia
Valencia has a long and varied coastline, which is perfect for planning a beach proposal. A short drive from the city, you can find beautiful places, such as urban beaches, small coves and natural stretches of sand, which are peaceful and away from the city crowds. This variety is one of my favorite parts. I have noticed that most couples love to be photographed on the golden sand and gentle waves of a classic city beach. Other couples prefer pine trees or dunes as a background instead of beach bars. The Mediterranean light makes a real difference.
If couples ask me for suggestions for their proposal, I always ask what kind of atmosphere they are looking for in that special moment. If they want an easy, relaxed vibe in the city, I would suggest that the Malvarrosa beach, Patacona Beach, or the El Cabanyal Beach would be a wonderful choice. These places have palm trees, plenty of space to look for a calmer path of sand and a long walkway. However, some couples want somewhere that is quiet and more local, then Pinedo Beach could be an excellent choice, which is situated just south of the city. If a couple chooses to go further away from the crowds for a more private and intimate experience, I would suggest El Saler or La Devesa, which are close to the Albufera Natural Park, with pine trees and dunes, creating a completely different backdrop. However, I always inform my clients that none of the places are ever fully private.

Planning Around Light and Beach Weather
Timing is one of the most crucial aspects of my work and especially about a surprise proposal. I always suggest that my clients go early in the morning or just before the sunset, which is called the golden hour. This provides the softest and most romantic light. Mornings are also less crowded and quieter, so couples feel more relaxed and less conscious of people watching them. I believe autumn and spring are lovely as the weather is comparatively pleasant during this time. Wind is also an important factor that I always keep in mind, as the breeze is good for making the photos look more surreal; however, it is quite tricky to shoot. One thing that I always consider is not giving my client false hope regarding perfect or calm conditions as nature does not work that way; however, I look at the weather and suggest the best possible time for the proposal.

Coordinating the Surprise with Your Photographer
Keeping the surprise is the most important yet nerve-racking aspect for all the couples that I worked with. In my experience, I have realized that it is my job to be present at the moment without being seen. I always coordinate with my clients, especially with the partner, who is planning the proposal beforehand. This gives me an idea about the setting, time and my position. I communicate with my client via text message or simply wait for a signal to get ready. If the original plan doesn’t go as planned due to factors such as the weather or crowds, I always try to keep a backup plan in mind to ensure that they experience the best proposal.

Capturing the Proposal and Couple Portraits
After the proposal happens, I always stay discreet and let the emotions be real. I do not direct these moments, simply capture the moments as they unfold, such as from the first reaction to the hugs, the tears and the laughter. After that, I simply guide the couple for a more relaxed portrait along the shoreline. After such big moments, most people feel self-conscious in front of the camera, so I give them simple instructions more like suggestions rather than poses.

Practical Tips for a Beach Proposal
An accumulation of small things eventually makes these moments memorable and grand. I always suggest my clients bring the ring in a secure place, like zipped pocket rather than carrying it in a loose bag. In beach proposals, footwear is one of the most important aspects, as wearing heels could be tricky. For clothing and colour ideas that suit the setting, read my guide to what to wear for a photoshoot in Valencia.
Check for the weather forecast beforehand to bring an extra layer if the wind is cold. Take some time after the big moment, like taking a walk or just sitting on the beach so that the moment does not feel rushed.

Beach Proposal Planning at a Glance
If you are looking for a relaxed, central location, Malvarrosa Beach, Patacona Beach, and El Cabanyal Beach are the best choices. The best time is during spring and autumn, especially early in the morning or just before sunset, when the beaches are calmer. For discreet capturing, I plan my position beforehand, try to blend into the surroundings and stay discreet and keep in touch with my client. I always try to have a backup plan in my mind if the original plan does not go according to plan. For bookings, I suggest booking as early as possible, especially for weekends and busier months, like summer, which would help both of us to plan the entire proposal beforehand with every detail.
