Men’s Photoshoot in Valencia: Tips, Locations & What to Expect for Natural, Confident Portraits in Spain. Julia Gnatenko — Photographer Valencia, Alicante, Barcelona, Spain, Europe

Why Men’s Photoshoots Are More Popular

Than Ever When you think about a men’s photoshoot, you’re probably imagining some buff dude who has been prepped and polished within an inch of his life. His pecs and abs gleaming because they’ve slathered him in so much baby oil that he could probably be the Slip-N-Slide world champion without any water (or that weird plastic sheet). But that’s not the case anymore. So many men are booking professional photographers for a photoshoot, not just actors and models. They do this for a wide range of reasons. Some men want pro photos for their personal brand, like their LinkedIn profiles, websites, or resumes. Others are looking to get a leg up on the competition and make their dating profiles stand out. Many men book photoshoots to celebrate milestone birthdays or mark a career change or build their confidence and self-expression.

One place that has become a popular location for a men’s photoshoot is Valencia, Spain. And it’s easy to see why. It’s a stunning city that is absolutely filled with gorgeous natural light and so many different backdrops for your photos. It’s got stunning beaches, majestic medieval churches and castles, chic modern buildings, and hidden urban gems, all topped off with a famously laid-back Mediterranean vibe, making it perfect for any kind of photoshoot. And the best part? You don’t have to have any experience in front of the camera because a good photographer will get the best out of you and the location.

Who Is a Men’s Photoshoot For?

If you’ve never had your photos professionally taken before, why not? Nowadays, everyone is getting their pictures taken by a pro. Especially professionals like entrepreneurs, creatives, and directors, who need great photos for their portfolios, websites, and professional pages. But they’re not the only ones. Visitors to Valencia who want to capture their holiday experiences and memories without having to worry about blurry or badly framed photos will often book a professional shoot. Many couples also choose to document special life moments during their trip, and you can read more about what to expect in this guide to maternity photoshoots in Valencia. I’ve even met some locals who book professional photographers when they need to update their personal image. Like I’ve said, getting someone to take your photos is for everyone. And if you’re a man who feels awkward in front of the camera, don’t worry, because I’m going to break down exactly what you can expect from your photoshoot.

What a Men’s Photoshoot in Valencia Typically Looks Like

Before the Shoot

When you book a photographer, you’ll usually have a short consultation or a chat via email or text message to figure out exactly what you want for the day. Your photographer will usually ask you why you want a photoshoot, what style you want to go for, and if there are any specific places you want to shoot in. They’ll work with you to set your day up to be as awesome as possible.

During the Shoot

During your shoot, you can look forward to a relaxed pace. There’s no rushing from one location to another, just a chill day to make sure you look your absolute best. And, if you need to take a break, there’s time for that as well. Your photographer will give you simple guidance about where to stand and how to look natural. There’s never any pressure to perform or hold a stiff, uncomfortable pose. If you feel uncomfortable, you’ll look uncomfortable in your pictures, and no one wants that. Your photographer is going to focus on natural expressions and body language to make sure your presence is authentic.

After the Shoot

After the shoot, you and the photographer will go through the pictures they took so that you can choose the ones you want to keep. Remember, they’re always going to take multiple shots of every small adjustment and location change, so there are going to be a lot of images to choose from. Once you’ve chosen your pictures, your photographer will do some light, natural editing to make sure your shots are perfect. You’re not going to look like some airbrushed doll. The goal is to enhance how you look, not make you look like someone else. The editing process usually takes about two weeks, but this depends on how quickly your photographer works. Finally, your photographer will send you your photos. Some choose to send digital files, and others will send you digital images with a few printed ones. Again, that’s all up to the photographer and how they like to work.

Choosing the Right Location in Valencia

So, now that you’ve decided to book your photoshoot, the next question you have to ask is all about location, location, location. Valencia is the perfect blend of old and new, offering a wide variety of stunning backdrops. If you’re exploring options, you can check out this guide to the best photoshoot locations in Valencia for inspiration. From the soaring spires of the Valencia Cathedral to the futuristic City of Arts and Sciences, Valencia has a range of perfect locations for your photoshoot.

If you want a background that screams old school, El Carmen Street in the city’s Old Town is a medieval dream. The neighborhood is filled with amazing examples of medieval architecture, from the Arab wall to the Portal de la Valldigna. But if you’re into spectacular art and old buildings, then the Church of San Nicolás de Bari and San Pedro Mártir is an absolute must-choose location.

If you’re into something more modern, then you can’t go wrong with the City of Arts and Sciences. This almost 1.9-km-long (1.2 miles) complex of futuristic buildings along the old Turia riverbed is the perfect place to take amazing photos. The amazing buildings make for a perfect backdrop for any mood you’re going for. The Hemisfèric (IMAX cinema and planetarium), the Palau de les Arts (opera house), and the Umbracle (open-air garden) are all magnificent spots to choose for your professional photoshoot.

But if you’re more into nature and green spaces, you can’t go wrong with the Turia Gardens. You can stroll through the palm or orange trees while enjoying a little peace away from the hustle of the city. You have over 8 km (5 miles) of parks to choose from to get the perfect shots of you surrounded by natural beauty.

And speaking of natural beauty, Valencia has some of the most incredible beaches. La Malvarrosa beach is the most popular beach in the city, with long stretches of golden sand framed by the rich blue of the Mediterranean Sea. It makes for a breathtaking background with a relaxed atmosphere when you’re looking to have a men’s photoshoot in Valencia.

Whichever location you choose, your surroundings are going to affect your mood. Choosing a location with modern, bold buildings is going to make you feel confident and bold, while the parks and beaches are going to lead you to be calmer and more introspective. And your clothes are going to play a role too.

What to Wear for a Men’s Photoshoot

General Clothing Guidelines

Choosing your outfit for the day of your shoot is as important as choosing where to have your shoot. If you’re unsure what works best on camera, this guide on what to wear for a photoshoot in Valencia can help you plan your look. Your clothing is an extension of you and determines the mood for the day. Wear solid neutrals, regardless of the backdrop. No big logos or busy prints, as they will be distracting when people look at your images. Avoid shiny fabrics as well, as they are not always flattering, and the reflection won’t do you any favors. It’s about the fit, not the brand, so you should be comfortable in your outfit, not uncomfortable with a logo.

Outfit Ideas by Style

The way you dress is going to depend on the type of look you want to exhibit. A casual look consists of a comfortable-fitting t-shirt, well-fitting jeans, and clean sneakers. A smart casual look will involve a button-down shirt and some nice chinos. An elegant or formal look will involve a well-fitting suit and a plain shirt. More creative outfits will mix layers and textures and can include some of your favorite accessories. Whatever you choose, make sure your outfit is a reflection of who you are.

Shoes & Accessories

Speaking of accessories, you’ll want to keep these minimal. You don’t need to wear a ring on every finger or have a stack of bracelets and a watch crawling up your arm. They will draw attention away from you. Make sure your shoes are clean, because nothing ruins a perfectly put-together outfit more than a pair of dirty shoes. If you wear glasses, make sure your lenses are clean, and you have a spare pair (if possible). Your accessories are there to accent your outfit and make you look your best.

Grooming and Personal Preparation

Speaking of looking your best, you should think about grooming before your shoot. You’ve just spent all that time thinking about what to wear, you don’t want to be let down by a scruffy face or messy hair. Think about getting a haircut at least 5 to 10 days before the shoot to give it time to settle. You’ll also want to take care of your facial hair. If you go for the clean-shaven look, use a sharp razor and take your time to make sure you don’t get razor burn or nick yourself. If you have a beard, give it a trim to take care of any stragglers and to stop it from looking untidy. A little bit of well-tended stubble is also a great look.

For your skin, make sure you moisturize and don’t try any new skincare right before the shoot. You never know how your skin will react, and you don’t want angry red patches from an allergic reaction on the day. If you plan on having any close-up shots of your hands, make sure your nails are trimmed and clean, and you don’t have any hangnails or cracked skin. A professional manicure wouldn’t hurt. Finally, make sure you get enough rest the night before. Dark circles are not a good look on anybody, and being tired means you’re not going to have a good time during your photoshoot.

What If You Feel Awkward in Front of the Camera?

The biggest issue I see during shoots is people feeling awkward in front of the camera. Unless you have boatloads of confidence, being the focus of someone else’s undivided attention can be challenging. But if you’re feeling a bit shy in front of the camera or awkward, don’t worry! The good news is you don’t need to know how to pose. The photographer will instruct you on what looks best and most natural. If you don’t know where to put your hands, walk around or play with your jacket. Sitting can look effortlessly cool. And if something doesn’t feel right, change it up! It’s about being authentic, not getting it perfect! Mental prep for your shoot can reduce awkwardness, too.

How to Mentally Prepare for the Shoot

I personally think it’s best not to overthink it too much and don’t worry about your posing or the faces you make. Don’t worry about how you look or what people might think either. Just go with an open mind and trust the process — your photographer is a trained professional, so trust them to get the best shots of you! Just remember to breathe and enjoy the moment. You’re not there to entertain your photographer, but you are there to work with them to get beautiful photos!

How Long Does a Men’s Photoshoot Usually Take

You’re probably asking yourself, “How long is my shoot going to be?” It varies based on what you booked! Short sessions are usually 30-45 minutes, and they include mostly simple portraits. Normal sessions, with a variety of looks and locations, can be 1 to 1.5 hours. Longer sessions with more involved sets and outfit changes can take up to 3 hours. Your photographer will let you know how long you’ll be busy and set realistic expectations for the day. At the end of the day, quality matters way more than quantity. You can get stunning photos from a short session.

What You’ll Get Out of the Experience

So, what do you get out of your professional photoshoot? First, you’re going to get professional images that actually look and feel like you. And when you see those amazing pics, you’re going to get the best confidence boost because you’ll finally have photos you’ll want to use everywhere, not hide in a folder in the depths of your camera roll. Second, you’re going to be shown a whole new way to see yourself. Your photos are going to show off the best of you. Professional photos aren’t just for personal branding — many people also book sessions while travelling with loved ones. For example, beach sessions are especially popular, and you can learn more about planning one in this guide to beach family photoshoots in Spain.

Final Tips for a Successful Men’s Photoshoot in Valencia

My number one piece of advice is to choose a photographer whose style matches yours and feels natural to you. Also, be yourself. Don’t try to copy someone else’s look because it very rarely works out. Keep it simple and trust Valencia’s light and atmosphere, and your photographer to make you look amazing.

What I’ve been trying to say all along is that men’s photoshoots are about comfort and authenticity. A great shoot is going to make you look like the very best version of yourself, not some stylized model. Valencia is the best backdrop because it has a place to suit everyone’s taste and style. The success of your photoshoot will come from being prepared and relaxing into the moment on the day. When everything works out just right, you’ll find yourself having a great time, and you’ll get some amazing pictures too.

Curious if a date is available? Feel free to reach out. Even if you’re not sure yet, I’m always happy to answer questions or talk through ideas. No pressure at all.
