In Port Saplaya when I photograph proposals there, I am quite drawn to the relationship between the colourful waterfront buildings and the marina environment. Here, instead of just relying on dramatic viewpoints, I can use the surrounding areas to create photographs that feel varied and keep the couple at the center of attention. For me a proposal in Port Saplaya can work really well when the settings are allowed to remain a part of the experience. I think that colorful architecture can provide a strong background while the waterfront introduces a sense of openness. I feel that the area is active so I plan around people moving through the space rather than assuming that the location may be empty. Port Saplaya is located in Alboraya which is outside of Valencia. The official Valencia tourism identifies the location as around 5 km. from Valencia and there are public transport connections from Valencia to the selected proposal location.

Choosing a Proposal Spot in Port Saplaya
I choose Port Saplaya for proposals, simply because it looks quite colorful and I consider that the setting works from the photographer’s position. I look at the background first where colourful buildings, the waterfront, and architectural details can add interest but I also need to consider where I can stand without making the surprise quite obvious. I see that passing visitors is another part of photography as the location is not a private photographic set so the people may naturally work through the area. I do not compromise my clients’ privacy, instead I work with the movement around the couple and look for a position where passing activity does not dominate the frame. I also distinguish between public and private spaces. If the proposal is taking place at a restaurant or another privately managed venue, I recommend checking with the venue in advance to confirm whether permission is required.

Finding the Right Light and Time of Day
The time of day of the proposal can change how the location is looking and I consider the season, pedestrian activity and the relationship between the building and the available light. The surrounding architecture also creates areas of shade so I think about where the couple can stand and in what direction I want the photograph to be taken from. I do not assume that the sunset is the correct option for photography. I think the best time for me depends on the location, the proposal and what kind of activity the couple wants to do after the proposal. The official tourism information describes Port Saplaya beach as a semi urban beach with fine sand and moderate waves that is active throughout the year. I think that it is useful to remember during the time of planning a proposal that the waterfront has a different atmosphere so the weather and the temperature during the daytime is not a guaranteed factor of staying the same.

Planning the Meeting Point and Keeping the Surprise
At the time of the surprise proposal photography, I want all the planning to be completed before the couple is arriving and I normally prefer to work within a precise meeting point. This is quite important to make sure that the person who is proposing knows where to go without communicating with me at the last minute. I also agree on where I want to position myself to take photographs and suitable time management which is useful for my clients who have never visited the selected location. The area can feel different when the person is trying to navigate that for the first time, so I prefer to remove as much uncertainty as possible before the proposal happens. I keep the communication with my client discreet and once the couple arrives, my first priority is to blend into the surroundings and wait for the right moment to take the photographs.

Capturing the Proposal and Natural Reactions
My approach of photographing the proposal is deliberate and obstructive, as I do not want the person that is being surprised to notice me and wonder why the photographer is standing near to them. Instead of that, I watch the couple and photograph the proposal approach and what happens after the proposal. I look to capture the smaller memorable moments such as a hand reaching for the ring, a change in their body language or the couple standing together after the surprise in an emotional moment. I believe that the surprise can sometimes tell as much of the story as the main photograph itself.

Couple Portraits After the Proposal
Once the surprise has happened, I gently guide the couple into a more relaxed photoshoot and the coloured environment in the venue gives me plenty of opportunities to work with. I also pay attention to the comfort of the clients by recommending comfortable footwear and controlling the amount of walking involved, affecting the amount of relaxation a couple feels. During the proposal, I recommend the couple prepare the ring, comfortable footwear, make them aware of the wind and transportation, provide a weather backup plan and obtain permission from the venue.

Practical Planning for a Proposal Near Valencia
I would choose an architectural setting based on the light, pedestrian movement and my ability to position for surprise proposal photography. I choose the time for the proposal photos according to the specific location, light and foot traffic.
In Port Saplaya, finding a quiet spot to propose is suitable for photography but I would not guarantee my clients complete privacy. Instead, I prefer to work around the natural flow of people in the area and choose a position where I can photograph the moment comfortably and discreetly. As a proposal photographer in Valencia, I coordinate the exact meeting point and where I’ll be positioned in advance. I take rain and wind into account when planning the proposal rather than dealing with them at the last minute. If the weather conditions become unsuitable, we can adjust the location or use a backup plan.
